GREAT NEIGHBOURS TAKE PART IN RACE FOR UNITED WAY
Teams in high spirits at United Way's Great Neighbourhood Race
TORONTO, July 15, 2007 A battle of strength, wits and endurance ensued today as close to 200 enthusiastic racers took part in United Way's fourth annual Great Neighbourhood Race presented by State Street that kicked off at Berczy Park. Inspired by the hit television reality series The Amazing Race, the event saw teams of four rushing to collect clues, solve tasks and search for checkpoints throughout downtown Toronto in support of United Way of Greater Toronto and its network of 200 health and social service agencies across the city.
"This dynamic event enables Torontonians to learn about United Way and its agencies in a fun and interactive environment," said Zenia Wadhwani, Director of New Markets, United Way of Greater Toronto. "We provide the teams with clues and trivia questions related to the work being done by our agencies in an effort to engage participants and show them how they can join us in our mission to improve neighbourhoods across the city."
"State Street has been partnering with the United Way for many years, and we are proud our employees continue to support such a great cause and raise awareness of its mission in our community," said Kevin Drynan, acting CEO of State Street in Canada. "This event is another terrific example of the United Way's commitment to encouraging the community to give back to benefit those in need."
Following the fast-paced event, participants had plenty of energy left for the after-party at the Drake Hotel. The top three winning teams and the three teams who raised the most pledges received great prizes including Xbox 360s, MP3 players and gift certificates to the Drake Hotel, Cineplex and New Balance.
The event is organized by United Way of Greater Toronto's GenNext Cabinet, established in 2001 to promote charitable giving and volunteerism among 23- to 35-year-olds. The Great Neighbourhood Race is a signature event designed to engage a younger audience and encourage them to become civically engaged.
The GenNext Cabinet is made up of volunteers from various professional backgrounds whose goals include promoting awareness of social issues, encouraging involvement in United Way events, helping to provide an understanding of the importance of civic responsibility and assisting in the development of leadership opportunities within the organization. GenNext creates opportunities for individuals to support United Way through fundraising events and volunteer activities and by providing a forum for individuals to connect and get involved in their communities.
Established in 1956, United Way of Greater Toronto is a registered charity and community impact organization dedicated to improving lives and strengthening neighbourhoods across Toronto. United Way identifies needs and takes action to create a better, safer, stronger city through research, partnerships and support of a network of 200 health and social service agencies.
