United Way Toronto investing $71.2-million in community
Funds will support United Way's Neighbourhood Strategy initiatives
and network of 200 health and social service agencies
TORONTO—United Way Toronto today announced $71.2-million in allocations to strengthen individuals, families, and whole communities across Toronto.
The 2010 allocations will provide stable core funding and capacity building support to the organization's frontline agencies to strengthen the social fabric of our city.
United Way will also continue its work to address the root causes of social problems through initiatives like its Building Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy and by raising public understanding of the issues facing Toronto.
"We've been through one of the most difficult economic times in our city's history, but United Way's Campaign was an important reminder of what we can achieve when we come together," said United Way Toronto President and CEO Frances Lankin. "With uncertain times ahead, the commitment and compassion shown by the people of Toronto will improve social conditions in the community."
The 2010 allocations are as follows:
- $71.2-million invested across Toronto through support to United Way's network of frontline agencies, and special programs and initiatives particularly in the inner suburbs.
- $6.71-million distributed to other United Ways, as directed by donors, including Ajax-Uxbridge-Pickering, Oakville, Peel, and York Region.
- $16.5-million distributed to other charities other than United Way, as directed by donors.
In 2009, 14 per cent of United Way's revenue was spent on operating expenses — 11.4 per cent on fundraising and 2.6 per cent on administration.
Established in 1956, United Way Toronto is a charity working to advance the common good and create opportunities for a better life for everyone in our city. Working in partnership with others, we mobilize people and resources to address the root causes of social problems and to change community conditions for the better. United Way supports agencies that provide services to strengthen individuals, families, and communities.
