The Tomorrow Fund
Create a legacy for your community through your will
We live in one of the most caring and humane cities in the world.
The Tomorrow Fund has been established to ensure this tradition of caring continues.
The result will be a better quality of life for everyone, and the security that comes from knowing we can count on a stable future for our community's children.
The Tomorrow Fund is United Way's community-wide endowment fund for social services. While gifts to United Way's annual campaign benefit our community today, your gift to The Tomorrow Fund will ensure that United Way can introduce new programs, and continue funding current ones, to serve future generations of Torontonians.
Gifts to The Tomorrow Fund are invested in perpetuity. Only a portion of the interest income from your gift is used to support essential social and health programs. A gift to The Tomorrow Fund continues giving beyond your lifetime, and ensures that your generosity benefits our community well into the future.

Although this information focuses on a gift through a bequest in your will, other options include a gift of life insurance, a charitable gift annuity, a gift of securities or property, and tribute gifts. Information on these options is available and may be obtained by contacting United Way.
The Benefits of Giving
Capital Preservation
Your bequest to United Way's Tomorrow Fund will endure. The capital remains intact in perpetuity.
Responsible Stewardship
Responsible stewardship of The Tomorrow Fund is ensured by United Way's respected Board of Trustees, and the interest income allocated using United Way's trusted process of involving knowledgeable community volunteers and highly professional staff.
Investment Returns
In 2006, United Way’s investment strategy resulted in a 9% one year return as of December 31, 2006.
Investment Policy
The primary objective of the portfolio is to maximize return commensurate with a moderate level of risk. The use of contrasting investment management styles and investment managers that excel in specific market areas is intended to provide a higher rate of return at a lower risk.
The Tomorrow Fund is managed as part of the portfolio of the Toronto Community Foundation. During their regular meetings, United Way’s Investment Committee consistently monitors the Fund performance and adjusts it as necessary.
Disbursement Policy
In order to provide a stable level of funding to United Way programs 4.5 per cent of the opening balance of the endowment is available for disbursement each year. This policy extends to general endowed funds as well as endowed named funds.
Disbursements are made once each named fund reaches $10,000 – the amount required to establish a named fund. If named funds are less than $10,000, the investment income from such funds is capitalized annually.
Tax Benefits
All donations to United Way's Tomorrow Fund fully qualify for a charitable tax receipt. When making a bequest to The Tomorrow Fund, donors are now able to claim a tax receipt of up to 100% of net income in the year of death, with any excess available to be carried back to the previous tax year. When making your estate plans, your professional advisor can provide up-to-date information on tax benefits of charitable giving specific to your circumstances.
Flexibility
A gift to The Tomorrow Fund can respond to a range of future community needs or can reflect your special interests. Through an unrestricted gift you will be able to provide programs to meet human needs we can't even imagine today so your gift will always remain meaningful. You may also designate our gift to support a program, cause or special group you particularly care about.
Recognition
United Way has created Promises for Tomorrow, a recognition circle for donors who have included The Tomorrow Fund in their wills. Members of the Promises for Tomorrow circle are recognized appropriately for their commitment to the future well-being of the Toronto community. Allowing United Way to say thank you publicly may also inspire others considering a similar gift. Members of the Promises for Tomorrow circle may, of course, choose to remain anonymous.
We're here to help if you would like to discuss how you can make a difference tomorrow through your will, a representative of The Tomorrow Fund will be pleased to meet with you.
