RBC employees celebrate giving at the United Way Charity Classic Event

RBC employees came together on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 to have fun and show their generosity at the United Way Charity Classic Event. Admission to the event was $10 at the door, which included opportunities for winning door prizes as well as an afternoon of fun and games.

“This fantastic fundraising annual event is our opportunity to have lots of fun while making a difference in our community! The event represents our annual fundraising activity where two departments—Personal Financing Product & Cards and Payment Solutions—within RBC come together to create an afternoon that's full of fun, food, games, silent auctions, making it an overall memorable day, with all proceeds going to Charity Trust/United Way,” said Tracy Marshall, Business Rules Analyst, Portfolio Management & Credit Strategy at RBC.

Staff enjoyed a delicious dessert buffet; a silent auction for items such as travel vouchers, play stations, sporting event tickets, jewelry, and more; “Minute to Win It” games that allowed everyone one try at each game, such as cup stacking and ping-pong ball rolling; and a friendly competition of Rock Band, which saw four-person bands compete for various titles, such as best costumes/stage presence and best band name. The band that scored the highest points took home the title.

RBC staff will also take part in other fundraising efforts, such as dress-down days, 50/50 draws, food sales and raffles. So far, the two departments have already raised over $5,000 for the cause. RBC employees celebrate fundraising efforts for United Way Toronto at Championship Event

As part of wrap-up celebrations, over 400 employees with Marketing and Channel Strategy at RBC came together on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 to take part in the Charity Trust Championship Event, which included Hippity Hoppity Pony Races and Executive Sumo Wrestling. Employees received a ticket to the event, which included lunch and entry into several draws for prizes such as a digital camera, spa treatments and tickets to a Toronto Maple Leafs game.

“We use this event as an incentive to encourage our departments' employees to donate to United Way and our overall Charity Trust program. The success was huge—we actually had an all-time high in terms of our participation rate, in terms of making donations, and also the overall funds raised,” explains Alan Depencier, Vice President, Marketing Services and Transformation.

“The employees had a fantastic time. We think United Way is a phenomenal cause and we do what we can to support it each year.”

A huge success this year, the department saw an increase in participation, with over 68 percent of its employees taking part in workplace fundraising. RBC's goal is to raise $5.1-million provincially for the cause.

The Championship Event was a way to celebrate the fundraising success achieved by RBC employees, while giving staff an opportunity to gather and have some fun. Employees laughed and cheered on their fellow co-workers as they raced to the finish line on giant inflated ponies. Plus, watching their vice presidents and senior vice president take to the mat in humorous yet competitive sumo wrestling matches was a clear favourite among many in the crowd.

Ogilvy Renault LLP employees hit the dance floor to fundraise for United Way Toronto

Employees at Ogilvy Renault have fun taking part in the Dancing with the OR Stars fundraising event for United Way Toronto.

Employees at law firm Ogilvy Renault LLP's downtown Toronto offices got into the fundraising swing of things on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010 by taking part in the first-ever “Dancing with the OR Stars” event for United Way Toronto.

Three teams took to an impromptu dance floor to compete for the title of “star dance couple,” as part of Ogilvy Renault LLP's workplace fundraising campaign for United Way Toronto. The dance pairs showed off their moves to the applause and enjoyment of their coworkers, who all got into the giving spirit at the pizza lunch and silent auction that also went on during the event.

Employee Campaign Chairs Janelle Walsh, General Manager, Toronto/Administration and Randy C. Sutton, Partner, encouraged employees to have fun, give to the cause and take to the dance floor, too, which many did with laughter and enjoyment.

Ogilvy Renault LLP is aiming to raise $120,000 for United Way Toronto. Along with the Dancing with the OR Stars event, many of the law firm's almost 400 employees also showed their generosity at such workplace campaign events as a breakfast kick-off, selling “I appreciate you” roses for colleagues, a bake sale, raffle, and an auction where sandwiches made by James Padwick, Associate, called “Padwiches” went up on the block.

Deloitte, Proximity (BBDO), JWT, PHD and Ogilvy & Mather take part in 2010 United Way Toronto Dodgeball Tournament

On Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010 agencies Deloitte, Proximity (BBDO), JWT, PHD, and Ogilvy & Mather took to the gym floor at Jesse Ketchum Public School in a friendly competition to raise funds for United Way Toronto in a dodgeball tournament.

This was the second annual tournament organized by Matt Shadbolt from Deloitte, which is catching on fast with participants. This year's event saw Team PHD beat out last year's winners, Team JWT, in a fun-filled fundraising event for United Way Toronto. Team players helped raise over $3,000 for the cause.

Matt went above and beyond to make the tournament happen, securing the location, recruiting players and organizing the schedule. He's a true example of one person going above and beyond for United Way Toronto.

As extra incentive, proof of workplace donation allowed players to enter a draw for a pair of Raptor's tickets. Donations also went to helping each player's workplace United Way Toronto fundraising campaign as well.

The Hospital for Sick Children wraps up its fundraising campaign for United Way Toronto

Staff at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) wrapped up their 2010 fundraising campaign for United Way Toronto on Friday, Nov. 5 on a high note. Raising more than $133,000 for the cause, employees cheered the success knowing that their generosity will go to supporting United Way Toronto's member agencies and the good work they do in our community.

Along with their workplace campaign, staff took part in fun activities such as Halloween—themed costume and pumpkin—carving contests that featured many creative approaches, including a team of occupational therapists dressing up as characters from the movie Toy Story. The winning pumpkin was created by the medical engineering team, which had a ‘cyborg’ design. The event was hosted by CBC's Muhammad Lila and gave the staff a chance to come out, have fun, and give to United Way.

Molson Coors wraps up its highly successful national fundraising campaign for United Way

Showing their continued and outstanding support for United Ways across Canada again this year, the employees at Molson Coors wrapped up their highly successful fundraising campaign by announcing a total of $595,000 raised nationally for United Ways across the country. This amount included funds raised by generous employees and the corporate matching program.

Employees at Molson Coors locations all across Canada came out full force this year, showing their strong dedication for the cause by taking part in various workplace fundraising events and incentives. Special to this year's efforts, the Molson Coors fundraising efforts for United Way included a national prize—a trip for two to the Grey Cup. Employees who pledged more than $100 were automatically entered into the draw for the prize. Molson Coors also gave away four iPads in regional draws as incentive to give, not that it was necessary, with Molson Coors employees showing their generosity in every way they could.

In Toronto, employees took part in lots of fun internal events such as two pub nights at local venues St. Louis Bar and Grill and Lone Star Café. With the help of their staff and two sponsored employees, the Toronto team achieved a grand total of $63,000 in pledges, which will be matched corporately dollar for dollar. Special events held in Toronto also raised $17,000. Other Molson Coors locations also hosted pub nights and gala evenings for their employees to encourage fun and fundraising.

Scotiabank serves up a great start to its 2010 United Way Employee Campaign, Scotia Hope

An annual favourite, the hugely popular Scotiabank Pancake Breakfast was held on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, proving to be one of the best Scotiabank fundraisers yet. Hundreds of employees and community members took part, enjoying pancakes prepared by Scotiabank executives, with all proceeds going to United Way Toronto.

The breakfast kicked off Scotia Hope, Scotiabank’s 2010 United Way Employee Campaign. Getting attendees in the giving spirit, the Scotiabank Pancake Breakfast saw Scotiabank executives, employees, customers and community members joined by outgoing United Way Toronto President and CEO Frances Lankin, Canadian broadcaster Valerie Pringle, NHL Alumni, and former Toronto Maple Leaf Captain Darryl Sittler.

“The Scotiabank Pancake Breakfast is always a success because it brings people together in a fun way that draws attention to a great cause,” said Rick Waugh, Scotiabank President and CEO.

“Community involvement is an important part of the way we live, work and do business every day, and we're proud to support the United Way's efforts to bring hope to our neighbourhoods. This year, our Scotia Hope campaign goal is to raise more than $5.6-million through fun events like today's breakfast, the Scotia Hope Hockey Tournament and, most importantly, through the generosity of our employees,” he added.

Our city has gone through one of the most difficult economic times in our history. The worst may be over, but we're not out of the woods yet, which is why fundraising campaigns like Scotia Hope are so important.

"While we remain hopeful for economic recovery, many people in our city are still struggling. Now, more than ever, our city needs to rebuild resiliency and every one of us can help make that happen. Tuula Jalasjaa, IMS MD & Head, Investment Management Distribution, and Steve Gaskin, Vice President, Toronto Customer Contact Centre shared the sentiment. As Campaign Co-Chairs of the Scotiabank 2010 United Way Employee Campaign, they are confident this will be a great fundraising year for the Scotiabank’s employees.“We have a goal of $5.6-million this year, and I'm pleased to say, as of today, our first official kick-off day, we're already at 10 percent of that goal,” said Jalasjaa.

“It's a great campaign for employees to get involved with. It [fosters] incredible team building within all our divisions, as our employees get together. We have fun at events like today. It's not only a chance to raise money for a great cause, it's also a chance to have some fun together,” added Gaskin.

Along with the Scotiabank Pancake Breakfast, Scotiabank’s fundraising committee has other exciting fundraising events planned for its employees, such as the Scotiabank Rat Race, Scotiabankers Give Back Talent Night, and the Scotia Hope Hockey Game, which will be held on December 12, 2010. The Scotia Hope Hockey Game will invite youth from United Way Toronto agencies to play with Scotiabank executives and NHL Alumni.

A true leader when it comes to fundraising for United Way Toronto, Scotiabank continues its tradition of supporting the cause with 750 volunteer coordinators and canvassers taking part in this year’s fundraising efforts, which will be bolstered by the generous donations made by thousands of its employees.

CIBC’s National Client Appreciation Day raises funds for United Way Toronto and other United Way—Centraides across Canada

CIBC employees at a Toronto-based branch hold a cheque for $1,000, which they presented to United Way Toronto as part of their fundraising efforts for the cause.

Supporting United Way comes naturally to staff at CIBC—the bank has a history of fundraising for United Way not only here in Toronto, but also for many United Way–Centraides across Canada. CIBC employees always give generously, and this year more than 1,000 CIBC branches across the country presented cheques for $1,000 to their local United Way–Centraides during CIBC’s second National Client Appreciation Day. The result was a total of nearly $1.1-million being collectively raised by branches all across Canada.

The special day of giving, held on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, saw an overwhelming response from CIBC staff and clients, who came together in the spirit of giving. In Toronto specifically, this act of generosity resulted in 184 branches taking part, with staff and clients donating a total of $184,000 to United Way of Greater Toronto.

“For CIBC, supporting United Way is really about us supporting all our communities across the country. United Way brings a certain rigor around funding agencies and charities that are providing impactful social services and benefits in areas that vitally need the support,” said Allison Mudge, CIBC’s Senior Director Community Investment.

Usually, CIBC employees don’t get the opportunity to connect with United Way and its member agencies directly, which is what made the day a true highlight for everyone taking part. Representatives from United Way and member agencies visited various branches, sharing their experiences and the good work being done. This connection ended up making a real impact on employees.

“CIBC employees were thrilled about being able to donate money directly to United Way, and meet directly with the agencies working in their communities,” added Mudge.

Kinectrics’ staff carves out a great fundraising effort for United Way Toronto

Engineering firm Kinectrics got out the power tools, dry ice and other props to create fun pumpkins during their Halloween-themed fundraising event held on Friday, Oct. 29, 2010.

Aiming to raise $65,000 for United Way Toronto this year, employees enthusiastically got their hands deep in pumpkin innards while creating themed carvings. Eight pumpkins went under construction for the cause, which were later put up for sale with all proceeds going to United Way Toronto.

Made to resemble a hamburger—including real meat and yam fries—the winning pumpkin was a hit. Second place went to a United Way themed pumpkin that encourages staff to take a bite out of poverty, and third went to a pumpkin with colourful, flashing eyes.

The Ontario Clean Water Agency kicks off its United Way Toronto fundraising campaign with a cookie-decorating contest

Employees at the Ontario Clean Water Agency get creative at a cookie-decorating contest as part of their United Way Toronto fundraising kick-off.

Getting creative comes naturally to the staff at the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). As part of their annual fundraising campaign for United Way Toronto, the employees held a cookie-decorating contest as a means of raising funds for the cause. Seven teams representing internal departments were given a large cookie, edible decorating items and one hour to complete their design.

The event, organized by employees Amy Lane and Mary Anne Viani, was held on Friday, Oct. 29 and had a Halloween theme. While the competition was fierce, everyone had fun and got into the giving spirit as a result of the day’s events. With a staff base of 274 people, OCWA employees are looking to raise $15,000 for United Way this year—a 10% increase from last year’s amount.

Other fundraising efforts at OCWA will include a bake sale, paddleball championship game, raffles, pizza lunch with ice cream, chili lunch, Ebay bidding day, and a piggy bank collection day.

Four Seasons kicks off its United Way Toronto fundraising campaign with a spectacular pumpkin-carving contest

Four Seasons staff members got their annual fundraising campaign for United Way Toronto started with a highly creative—and highly competitive—pumpkin-carving contest on Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 at their corporate offices. Teams made up of representatives from various departments created pumpkin masterpieces—including a wishing well pumpkin, Chinese New Year dragon pumpkin, Twilight-themed pumpkin, surgery patient pumpkin, Hollywood-movie pumpkin, and the winning city hero pumpkin, among others—all in a highly fun and enthusiastic event that included performances, songs, speeches and the awarding of the winning pumpkin.

Fundraising committee chair Jennifer Cressman, Design and Construction Coordinator, was on hand to share about this highly popular event. “Employees are very fiercely competitive inter-departmentally. Any time where we do things that pit department against department, it gets employees really excited. There have been meetings over weeks to prepare for the pumpkin carving,” she explained.

“When we started it as our kick-off, it got the energy so high and great. We added the guest speaker, we said here’s what we’re doing for the next two weeks, and people went back to their desks and they donated.”

An important part of Four Seasons’ workplace culture, fundraising for United Way Toronto has been long encouraged and fostered by the company’s CEO, Katie Taylor, who has been involved with United Way’s Major Individual Giving Cabinet and has been supporting our organization for over 20 years.

“[At Four Seasons], we have 84% staff participation. Almost 80% of it is from the leaders. Leaders are part of a really, really strong support group here, and we have almost $20,000 in prizes that we give out for people who donate. So you can donate to win. You get something back almost every time here,” added Cressman.

Aiming to exceed last year’s total of $440,000, the Four Seasons team is aiming to raise $465,000 this year—an amount that they are well on their way to achieving.

“It’s a relationship we’ve had for over 20 years. It’s part of our culture. This is who we are. I can tell you from visiting a neighbourhood agency—seeing that the contribution they get from United Way is almost equal to what we raise here—we can go in and say, ‘We do this! We make this difference!’ It’s a really feel-good thing for us,” said Cressman.

During its campaign, Four Seasons is also holding its popular White Sale, which will go until October 14 and is open to United Way Toronto employees, friends and family. This year’s sale has raised $54,000. Four Seasons also has a matching program, which will help staff reach their final goal.

McCarthy Tétrault rocks its United Way Toronto fundraising campaign with battle of the bands event

About 250 McCarthy Tétrault staff members attended this year’s popular fundraising event, the MT Rock Band Fundraiser, which wrapped up the firm’s annual fundraising campaign for United Way Toronto.

Split into two parts, the event was the culmination of performance and fundraising efforts from firm members, who created groups representing their different office floors, played Rock Hero and Guitar Hero, and then competed for best pledge amounts.

The nine teams that raised the most funds then advanced to the second part of the competition, the MT Rock Band Fundraiser, a night which determined the final three winning performers and best super group. Performers dressed up, sang, and some even danced, all to the cheers, applause and amazement of the audience.

Even Marc-André Blanchard, Chair and CEO, got into the groove by dressing up in an orange tuxedo. Along with two other firm partners, Stephen Grant and Vanessa Grant, he helped judge each performance, American Idol style, offering up compliments and constructive criticism. The winning team received the firm’s coveted bust of Elvis Presley, awarded annually to the winner of each year’s fundraising competition.

McCarthy Tétrault is proud of its longstanding relationship with United Way Toronto, and the event is a favourite activity that both boosts fundraising efforts, office culture and allows everyone to have fun and socialize. The firm’s efforts in its Toronto office are part of its commitment to the United Way across Canada; the firm has been in the million-dollar club for the past two years.

Northern Secondary School kicks off their United Way Toronto fundraising campaign with a special assembly and activities week

Toronto’s Northern Secondary School got its annual United Way fundraising campaign off to a boisterous start at a special assembly that marked the beginning of Fundraising Week. The event was attended by approximately 1,800 students and staff, and included music, fun presentations and competitions, which got everyone in the giving mood.

Going above and beyond for the cause, the students of Northern Secondary have mastered fundraising. The assembly, which was put together by the school’s United Way Committee, included a student-created campaign video, music and performances. The key speaker Fernelle Edmund-Davis, Manager of Drop-In and Programming at Second Base Youth Shelter, was the highlight of the day, closely followed by the preview of the Faculty Follies. Plus, the gauntlet was thrown for the Great Race contest.

The assembly also marked the start of United Way Week, held from October 18-23 at the school, which included a Photo Scavenger Hunt, Improv Show, Great Race, Faculty Follies, Skills and Talents Auction, and, as a finale, participation in the Enbridge CN Tower Climb for United Way. In November, the United Way Committee will also hold a silent auction and a fashion show in December. Northern Secondary is hoping to raise $13,000 this year.

Not new to great fundraising tactics, Northern Secondary students received the 2009 Spirit Award in the Public Secondary School division for their social media campaign. Students utilized technology to build awareness of United Way Toronto's impact on the community. By creating a Facebook page, advertising key fundraising activities to students, and setting up their own United Way Toronto website, they helped the school increase its donations by more than 10%, raising over $13,000 from 1,700 students last year.

Procter & Gamble performers take the stage at a special musical-themed United Way campaign kick-off

Procter & Gamble (P&G) got their employees singing along and in high spirits at their recent United Way fundraising campaign kick-off held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 by throwing a musical-themed performance at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in North York.

Local elementary school students and a large audience of about 600 employees came together to get in the spirit of giving for United Way Toronto, in theatrical style. P&G’s President and CEO Tim Penner got the performance started with an inspiring speech. Also on hand to share in the celebrations were United Way Toronto’s new President and CEO Susan McIsaac and outgoing President and CEO Francis Lankin.

Approximately 300 P&G staff will be personally stepping up this year and volunteer their time to support P&G’s United Way fundraising activities and pledge campaign. This extraordinary effort is astonishing, considering they’re aiming to fundraise $1.6-million this year for their communities through the Toronto campaign.

Among some of their more notable fundraising efforts, P&G’s gennext team will be launching a second pilot of the ‘P&G Friends and Family Campaign,’ a social media movement that will see volunteers engage their online networks in support of United Way Toronto.

P&G will also see a return of their hugely popular Warehouse Sale, which will include both Kraft and Cadbury this year. Plus, P&G will also continue with their  Live, Learn and ThriveTM special gift in support of Focus on Youth, a program targeting youth in Toronto’s 13 Priority Neighbourhoods.

CIBC Mellon successfully serves up its annual kick-off event, the CIBC Mellon United Way Pancake Breakfast

CIBC Mellon’s annual kick-off event was a resounding success yet again this year. Members of the executive team donned aprons, fired up skillets and flipped pancakes to show their support for the cause at the CIBC Mellon’s United Way Pancake Breakfast. The event was held in the morning on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at the beautiful CIBC Mellon Banking Hall, located at 320 Bay Street in Toronto.

CIBC Mellon employees, gennext members and fundraising committee members were all on hand to take part in the Pancake Breakfast. Cooked by CIBC Mellon’s executive team and headed by President and CEO Thomas Monahan—who donned an apron and picked up a spatula to help out—the tasty event served up delicious pancakes, waffles, crepes and other goodies. With hundreds of attendees purchasing tickets, it was a great success!

In fact, an impressive 445 tickets were sold at $4 apiece, raising $1,780 for United Way Toronto. Along with the CIBC Mellon United Way Pancake Breakfast and the traditional workplace campaign, employees’ fundraising efforts will include an art auction, share the wealth initiative, and an agency tour of United Way’s member agency Eva’s Phoenix.

UPS Canada’s Toronto Hub Truck Pull for United Way a strong success!

With more than 260 people in attendance at this year’s UPS Canada’s Toronto Hub Truck Pull for United Way, the event proved to be a resounding success that raised approximately $8,700 for the cause, thanks to combined funds raised from pledges, a BBQ and raffles.

UPS Canada’s Toronto Hub’s employees, representatives from outside businesses, volunteers, family members, and friends all gathered on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 to take part in this fun and energetic third annual event to help fundraise for United Way Toronto.

Kicking off the Truck Pull was full-time Toronto Hub Supervisor Jonathan Hasmatali, who volunteered to serve as the event MC. Along with Hasmatali, Bhavdeep Duggal organized the Dhol Circle—a group of professional drummers—to set the tone for the day’s events. Keeping things moving was DJ Dwight Straker, Mississauga PM Local Sort Part-Time Supervisor. It was a fantastic kick-off to the day’s events.

The UPS Toronto Hub Truck Pull saw 22 teams competing—an impressive amount of muscles were flexed—but only four could take home a trophy at the end of the day. The top four teams with the best truck-pull times included (by category):

The Truck Pull also kicked off UPS Canada’s Global Volunteer Month activities. This event alone logged more than 200 volunteer hours. At the end of the day, along with raising a fantastic amount for United Way Toronto, everyone had a fun time participating and gathering together for the cause. Chaitons LLP held its United Way workplace campaign kick-off on Monday, October 4 at their downtown Toronto office. Employees showed their excitement and enthusiasm for this year’s campaign, gathering together to celebrate its start.

The staff is gearing up for its best fundraising efforts for United Way Toronto this year. Employees at Chaitons LLP are going that extra mile by working hard to plan enjoyable events to help ‘fun’draise for the cause.

With a workforce of approximately 100 employees, Chaitons LLP will be doing myriad things to raise money for United Way Toronto. In addition to a strong pledge drive and a generous corporate match of funds raised for the United Way Community Fund, they’re planning on lots of great ways to engage employees in the effort, such as e-mail bingo, a spelling bee, bowling night, raffle and pot-luck lunch.

Already off to a great start, before the end of the second day, almost 50% of Chaitons LLP’s staff had already returned their pledge forms.

The Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) kicked off its fundraising campaign for United Way Toronto on September 21, 2010, with CEO and United Way Board of Trustees Member Keiko Nakamura, Campaign Chair and CAO Mitzie Hunter, employees and the fundraising committee all on hand to enjoy the event at Ashbridges Bay Park.

Topping last year’s goal, this year TCHC announced that it would be increasing its fundraising goal by 10%, meaning the company will aim to raise an impressive $250,000 for the cause.

Management and staff at TCHC are excited to reach this goal; they have many exciting fundraising activities planned. Along with putting together another team this year for the Enbridge CN Tower Climb for United Way, each office location’s staff will also be holding its own events, some of which include a ‘Dancing with the Stars’ event, karaoke night and a battle of the bands night.

In December, when TCHC will be wrapping up their fundraising efforts, all staff will come together for a grand finale: a company-wide talent competition. The winner will receive a prize, a trophy and, of course, bragging rights.

11th Annual Woodbine Turf Races raise $18,000 for United Way

Thanks to various participants and employees of Woodbine Entertainment Group, United Way Toronto is $18,000 closer to meeting this year's fundraising goal

In its 11th year, the Annual Woodbine Turf Races have grown from being a small race among Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) employees to an event that saw over 140 participants take part this year.

Runners raised an initial $14,000, and thanks to WEG matching the amount raised by their employees dollar for dollar (who raised over $4,000), a grand total of $18,000 was raised for United Way Toronto—an impressive amount that will go toward this year's fundraising goal of $113-million.

At this year's event, runners from 680 News, Toronto Police Services, United Way Toronto member agencies and business partners participated in the races, which were held at Woodbine's world famous E.P. Taylor Turf course.

Events included the 1 1/2 mile Marathon, the Ladies 100-metre dash, Men's 100-metre dash, and a team relay.

"We think this event is something special," said Nick Eaves, WEG's President and CEO, about the races. "It provides a unique way to compete alongside co-workers, experience the thrill of horse racing and raise money for a worthy cause."

This year's total raised amount proved to break record, vastly exceeding last year's amount. In 2009, over $4,000 was raised for the cause.

City of Toronto Kicks-Off United Way Campaign with $1.25-million Goal

An enthusiastic crowd at Nathan Phillips Square cheered on outgoing United Way Toronto President and CEO Frances Lankin and Mayor David Miller today as they announced the City of Toronto employees' ambitious campaign goal.

Working together, Lankin and Mayor Miller unfurled a banner showing the amount of $1.25-million to resounding cheers and applause. Kicking off the employees' campaign, Richard Majkot and Ed Fearon of COTAPSA also presented a cheque to United Way Toronto for $2,000 and Frank Ramagnano of the Toronto Professional Fire Fighter's Association presented a cheque for $30,000 to City of Toronto United Way Project Director Cal Scotchmer.

The event highlighted Mayor Miller's last Kick-Off for United Way Toronto as mayor of the city. Noting his pleasure at having worked with United Way Toronto, he also cheered on the outstanding work of outgoing UWT CEO and President Frances Lankin. Both called City of Toronto employees to action, noting that now—with the economic state of Toronto having a long way to go yet—more than ever, we need to work together to make a difference.

"We need to help support those less fortunate than ourselves, especially during these hard economic times. Many [in our community] are suffering. Some of us need more and we all need to help," added Scotchmer, who led the Kick-Off and has been spearheading the pledge card drive at City Hall.

While the overall UWT goal amount of $113-million will take work to accomplish, today's Kick-Off made it clear that Torontonians are ready to meet the challenge.

The event was more than just about raising funds—it was also about having fun. The crowd was treated to BBQ prepared by Toronto's Fire Chief William Stewart and his crew, as well as live performances from Tyrone Gabriel of the Nylons, hosts 98.1 CHUM FM's Erin Davis and Mike Cooper, The Wise Guys, and both the ‘TTC Idol Singers' and the ‘City Singers,' whose participants competed for title of best performer at this year's event.


ADP Hosts Charity BBQ for United Way

The management and staff at ADP in Etobicoke held a fundraising barbecue for United Way on August 20, 2010. Hundreds of employees enjoyed a sunny afternoon with their colleagues in Tom Riley Park, enjoying mouthwatering sausages, hamburgers, veggie burgers and salads, all in support of United Way's Community Fund. Staff contestants were entertained with games of chance that also raised money for the cause. ADP found that together they can make a difference in their community.

HKMB HUB International hosts their 5th Annual Hockey Challenge for United Way Toronto

Since its inception in 2006, the HKMB HUB International Hockey Challenge continues to be the premier hockey event in the insurance industry. Hosted at the Air Canada Centre, this year's event included special appearances by sledge hockey champion and Olympic torch bearer Ryan Bennett, Mike "Pinball" Clemons, and the beloved Carlton the Bear!

For the third year running Team Claims beat Team Underwriting to maintain trophy possession and bragging rights. Needless to say, the rivalry is fierce and challenges have already been made for next year's game! After the gruelling match every one came together including the players, fans, friends, family, and business colleagues to enjoy refreshments at Lord Stanley's Mug. Ticket sales for amazing draw prizes which included signed NHL jersey's a team signed Leaf's stick, Raptor's Platinum tickets, and a weekend getaway at Greenestone Resort added to the funds raised for this worthy cause! Exceeding its goal, the event raised over $11,500 for United Way Toronto, a 22% increase over 2009!
